Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Leramo Caleb of Ekiti State, who died following a violent altercation with his wife in Ado-Ekiti, had reportedly arrested a man his wife was involved with in an extramarital affair.
A source privy to the situation informed newsmen on Tuesday evening.
The Nigerian Police Force earlier on Tuesday confirmed the deaths of both ASP Caleb and his wife to newsmen.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday in the Ita-Eku area along Igirigiri Road, leaving the community in shock.
According to the source, ASP Caleb, a former police prosecutor known for his dedication to duty, had been grappling with marital problems due to allegations of infidelity.
The source mentioned that earlier this year, the officer caught his wife in an extramarital affair and arrested her alleged lover.
However, at the police station, he was advised to address the issue with his wife rather than focusing on her partner.
The arrest reportedly exacerbated tensions in their marriage, leading to ongoing disputes.
The source alleged that Caleb’s wife drugged his food, rendering him weak before mutilating him by cutting off his manhood. In a desperate act of retaliation, Caleb allegedly mustered his last strength to fatally attack his wife before succumbing to his injuries.
It was reported that Caleb bled to death at the scene, while his wife was rushed to the hospital, where she was later confirmed dead.
The source said: “He was one of the police prosecutors that were always focused on their duties.
“He was such a brave and courageous man that I love attending court proceedings where he was the prosecutor until there was a Restructuring within police system that led to his transfer to Oye-Ekiti.
“Few months ago, I met him again and we talked, but not about his family affairs. However, through another his very close friend who is also a prosecutor, I learned that Officer Caleb had issue of infidelity with his wife and as a police officer, he started monitoring his wife until she was caught red-handed which angered him and led to the arrest of his wife’s concubine, but at the police station, Officer Caleb was told to work on his wife instead of arresting her manfriend.
“Both went home, but the marriage wasn’t the same since then. It had been one issue after the other since the arrest was made early January this year.
“However, it was further learned yesterday that the wife might put drug inside Caleb’s food which weakened him that gave his wife chance to remove his manhood.
“Like Samson’s last strength, Caleb later received the last courage and power to retaliate.
“He died in the pool of his blood over the injury while his wife was rushed to ABUAD, there she was confirmed dead and both were deposited in the mortuary.”
Their bodies were seen in a video obtained by newsmen as they were being deposited at the mortuary.
