As we gather to commemorate Democracy Day on June 12, 2025, it is essential to reflect not only on our nation’s journey towards democratic governance but also on the persistent challenges we face and the promise that lies ahead. The Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu Support Group (AATSG) stands together with all Nigerians to honor our democratic legacy and to advocate for its evolution into a genuine force for transformation in the lives of our citizens.

A Disconnect Between Democracy and the Everyday Citizen

As we celebrate this day, we must confront some uncomfortable truths. Despite the democratic structures in place, have we made significant strides in improving the lives of our citizens? Does democracy truly resonate with the common man? We find ourselves asking:- Do our rural communities have access to clean water?- Are our cities illuminated by reliable electricity?- Is food security a reality for our households?- Are our educational and healthcare systems adequately serving our population? These questions bring to light the sobering reality of stagnation in many essential sectors.

Though we have made progress as a nation, the aspirations and everyday needs of ordinary Nigerians remain unmet. It is evident that we need a renewed commitment to democracy one that is responsive to the people it aims to serve. At AATSG, we envision a democracy that transcends mere electoral participation.

We believe that fitting our democracy to the needs of the citizenry is not just a noble aspiration; it is an urgent necessity. Therefore, we call for a collective commitment to implement transformative changes that will restore faith in our democratic process and ensure it works effectively for every citizen.

A Renewed Focus on Impactful Governance

We must embrace a framework that prioritizes genuine outcomes. Here are key focus areas that deserve immediate attention:

1. Infrastructure Must Deliver Impact

We demand a renewed dedication to transparency and execution regarding infrastructure projects. Each federal initiative should be monitored to ensure it truly serves those intended. Breaking the cycle of abandoned projects and corrupt contractors is critical to rebuilding trust.

2. Healthcare Must Reach the Grassroots

We advocate for a robust primary healthcare framework, ensuring accessibility and affordability. Health is not a privilege; it is a fundamental human right. Every Nigerian should have access to quality healthcare services.

3. Education Must Be Free and Functional

Our ambition is to ensure compulsory, free education from primary to technical school for all children. It is imperative that our educational system equips the youth with both skills and the knowledge that will allow them to thrive in a competitive world.

4. Bring Down Food Prices Through Policy

By implementing an array of strategic agricultural policies, we can substantially reduce food prices. Investments in local production, improved farm-to-market access, and support for farmers will cultivate food security and economic independence.

5. Democracy Must Mean Power to the People

Let us empower citizens to hold elected officials accountable. Budgets should be participatory, reflecting the needs and priorities of communities. We envision an active citizenry that believes in and participates wholeheartedly in democracy.

As the National Chairman of AATSG, I reaffirm our steadfast support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. His leadership embodies the audacity of hope and reform that our nation urgently requires. However, effective democracy demands active participation from all of us. It is not enough to celebrate our achievements; we must also show up demanding better governance, contributing to community solutions, and participating in dialogue on national issues.

A Pledge for the Future

On this Democracy Day, let us resolve together to not merely celebrate our democratic principles but to strengthen them for the benefit of all. Let us strive for a Nigeria where democracy is not an empty promise but a source of empowerment for every citizen. Where the government functions not as an elite club but as a devoted servant, tirelessly working for the aspirations of the people.

As we reflect on our heritage and the road ahead, remember: democracy thrives on participation, accountability, and the unwavering belief that we can make a difference. May our collective resolve ensure that democracy in Nigeria truly delivers tangible benefits for every citizen. Happy Democracy Day to all Nigerians! Together, let us build a Nigeria where democracy is a solution, not just a slogan.

Signed: Otunba Abayomi OdunowoNational Chairman, AATSG
