A gas cylinder explosion rocked the Ijora Badia area of Lagos on Tuesday, injuring at least 20 people, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos Operations Office (LOO).

The incident occurred at No. 12 Amusu Street, within the Apapa Iganmu Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

In a statement, NEMA said that the explosion occurred when a 25-kilogramme gas cylinder began leaking inside a small retail shop, which also stored five similar-sized cylinders.

According to the emergency agency, the enclosed nature of the space and the prevailing heat caused an accumulation of gas, which ultimately ignited into a powerful explosion followed by a fire outbreak.

NEMA noted that its emergency responders arrived promptly at the scene following a distress call it received and quickly began containment and rescue efforts.

The explosion resulted in injuries to 20 individuals—14 of whom sustained severe burns, while six others suffered minor burn injuries.

NEMA said all victims were swiftly evacuated to nearby hospitals for emergency medical treatment.

The agency said that in collaboration with the Apapa Iganmu LCDA team, its Lagos Operations Office conducted a comprehensive on-site damage assessment and safety inspection to mitigate further risks.

The emergency team also visited the hospitals housing the injured to assess their conditions and provide necessary support.

NEMA urged residents and businesses to strictly follow safety guidelines when storing and handling gas cylinders, especially during the current heat wave.

The agency said further investigations into the cause of the leak and possible lapses in safety compliance were ongoing.
