Tensions have escalated in Enwan community, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, following the killing of a young man, Cosmos, during a violent encounter involving unidentified men suspected to be policemen from Ekiti State.

In a statement issued by Dr. Steve Momoh, Chairman of the Elders Council of the Enwan Progressive Congress, the community condemned what it described as an unauthorised and unlawful invasion by individuals claiming to be officers of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Ekiti State Police Command.

The incident, which reportedly occurred without coordination with the Edo State Police Command, has sparked outrage among residents.

The suspects were said to have arrived in a Toyota bus with the private registration number AKD 514 HX, allegedly registered to Afe Babalola University, rather than a marked police vehicle — further raising suspicions about the legitimacy of the operation.

The statement also criticised a man who allegedly made damaging allegations against the community’s youth, accusing them of internet fraud, ritual killings, and attacking the unidentified operatives with weapons.

The community rejected the claims as baseless and called for his public apology and an investigation into his conduct.

Enwan leaders have demanded a thorough and impartial investigation by the Nigeria Police Force, the Police Service Commission, and other federal oversight bodies.Travel guides

They insist that the identities of all involved operatives be made public and that those found guilty face prosecution.

“This community will not be silenced in the face of injustice,” the statement read. “We call on the Inspector General of Police to clarify the legal framework for inter-state police operations to prevent future abuses.”

Residents continue to mourn the death of Cosmos while demanding accountability, transparency, and justice in what they describe as a gross abuse of power and breach of law enforcement protocols.
