Alleged att@ck on Peter Obi, Obidient Movement members in Benin City

An incident involving former presidential candidate Peter Obi and members of the Obidient Movement was reported on Tuesday in Benin City, Edo State, following a political event linked to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The claim was made by Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, who alleged that armed individuals followed a convoy associated with Obi and ADC leaders after the formal declaration of Olumide Akpata into the party. According to Tanko’s statement, the group was moving from the ADC Secretariat toward the residence of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun when gunfire was reported.

Tanko said sh0ts were fired at a gate along the route and that several vehicles were damaged. He described the incident as a “survived assassination attempt” and warned that “democracy is in danger.” No injuries or fatalities were mentioned in the statement, and Obi was reported to have left the area unharmed.

As of the time of publication, there has been no official confirmation from the Nigeria Police Force, Edo State authorities, or other security agencies. No suspects have been identified publicly, and no independent eyewitness accounts or forensic details have been released to corroborate the claims.

The report also does not specify the number of vehicles affected, the exact location of the alleged sh0ts, or whether any formal complaint has been filed with law enforcement. There has been no public response from the Edo State Government, the ADC leadership beyond the statement cited, or from Obi himself.

The development, if substantiated, would raise concerns about political safety and the conduct of opposition activities amid Nigeria’s evolving political landscape. However, without official verification, the incident remains an allegation pending investigation.
