UK Releases Former Envoy Peter Mandelson on Bail in Expanding Epstein-Linked Probe

London police have released former UK ambassador to Washington Peter Mandelson on bail following his arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office, as investigators examine matters connected to documents linked to the late US financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The Metropolitan Police said a 72-year-old man was detained on Monday evening and released several hours later pending further investigation. Officers did not specify the documents at the centre of the inquiry or provide a timetable for the next procedural steps.

The arrest follows renewed scrutiny arising from recently released materials associated with Epstein. Investigators are examining claims that Mandelson may have sent sensitive government documents to Epstein during his time as a minister, including during the period surrounding the 2008 financial crisis. Police have not confirmed the nature or classification of any documents under review.

The case has unfolded amid heightened political pressure after Prince Andrew was separately detained and released under investigation last week in a distinct misconduct inquiry linked to the same tranche of Epstein-related materials. British authorities have stressed that the two matters are being handled separately.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer dismissed Mandelson from his role as envoy to Washington in September, following earlier disclosures that highlighted the extent of Mandelson’s past association with Epstein. Starmer has apologised publicly to victims of Epstein’s abuse and said Mandelson misrepresented aspects of his relationship with the financier during the vetting process. The controversy has already prompted the resignation of two senior aides.

Mandelson’s legal representatives at Mishcon de Reya have said he regrets believing Epstein’s assurances and maintains that he did not understand the full scope of Epstein’s criminal conduct until after Epstein’s death in 2019. They said Mandelson is “profoundly sorry” that vulnerable individuals were not protected.

The government has announced plans to publish large volumes of correspondence and records related to Mandelson’s appointment and vetting, with an initial release expected in early March. Ministers say the disclosures are intended to clarify decision-making and restore public confidence.

The fallout has extended beyond politics. Mandelson has stepped down from the House of Lords, and the advisory firm he co-founded, Global Counsel, has ceased trading. Several major clients, including Barclays, Tesco, and the Premier League, have cut ties, according to UK media reports.

Police confirmed that specialist officers previously searched properties linked to Mandelson in London and Wiltshire as part of the ongoing inquiry. No charges have been announced, and investigators say the matter remains active.
