A video has surfaced online of two teachers Mwesigye and Twesigye from Standard College Rwashamaire in Uganda flogging a Senior Two (S.2) student for sneaking out of school to eat.

The video shows the teachers relentlessly flogging the student, with no opportunity given for him to express himself.

The Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) has condemned the act, calling it “torture and corporal punishment” that is “highly prohibited by the Children Act (2016).”

“This is an act of Torture and a corporal punishment experienced by this student is highly condemned by our institution and highly prohibited by the children act (2016),” UNSA stated in a public statement.

The incident occurred in Ntungamo, where the student, Akampa Blair, had left the school premises to buy chapati and beans (Kikomando).

A case has been opened at Ntungamo Central Police Station (CPS) as police hunt for the teachers involved: Mwesigye Anneb, the Director of Studies, and Twesigye Naboth, a teacher.

“We have learnt the act was performed in Ntungamo, where this S.2 student had sneaked out of school to town to eat a chapati and beans (Kikomando),” UNSA explained. “We have also learnt that the case was opened at Ntungamo CPS.”

UNSA is calling for swift justice, demanding that the police expedite the case and take the culprits to court.

“We ask the police to expedite the case process, arrest the culprits, and have a case sent to court for their fate to be determined,” it said.

The association has also urged the Ministry of Education to implement suitable punishments for the teachers involved.

“We shall also task the Ministry of Education to look at the suitable punishment deserving such teachers of that school,” the association said.

UNSA’s president, Mugazhu Wilson, is scheduled to visit Ntungamo to evaluate the handling of the situation.

“As UNSA, we remain committed to protecting the welfare of the students of Uganda wherever and whenever they will be,” it said.

The Uganda Police Force is actively searching for Mwesigye and Twesigye for the brutal torture of the student.

UNSA leadership has condemned the incident, saying that “these teachers in the video must be held accountable.”

The issue has gained widespread attention, with calls for Ugandan Education Minister and First Lady Janet Museveni to ensure justice is served.
