The Nigeria Police Force has said it strongly condemned the violence that erupted following the takeover of local government offices in Osun State.

In a statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, and seen by newsmen, the police expressed its commitment to restoring normalcy and bringing the perpetrators to justice.

The statement reads: “The Nigeria Police Force condemns, in the strongest terms, the recent violence in Osun State that has disrupted the peace and safety of the region, vowing to ensure that those responsible face the full force of the law.”

The violence has caused significant property damage and, tragically, resulted in the loss of innocent lives.

It was also noted that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the deployment of additional tactical units to the state in order to enhance security and restore order.

“The Police acknowledge that violence undermines the democratic process and endangers the well-being of citizens. The Force is fully committed to identifying the perpetrators and holding them accountable,” the statement continued.

The police further emphasised that it would not stand by while Osun State’s peace and stability are threatened.

“The Force will not tolerate any form of lawlessness, hooliganism, or anarchy. The perpetrators of these criminal acts will be tracked down and made to face the consequences of their actions. Citizens are urged to remain calm as efforts to restore order continue.”

Local leaders and residents of Osun are encouraged to avoid violence and continue with their lawful activities. “The judiciary is the ultimate authority in settling electoral disputes, and political figures must respect its rulings, maintaining democratic values and the rule of law. Citizens are advised to go about their legal business without fear.”

The statement concluded that the police would continue to closely monitor the situation in Osun and implement necessary measures to ensure the safety of all residents.

Earlier, newsmen reported that Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, had ordered security agencies to take control of all local government offices following violent clashes triggered by an alleged attempted takeover by sacked All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmen and councillors.

In a statement released on Monday via his X account, Adeleke urged both residents and politicians, regardless of political party affiliation, to avoid the secretariats to prevent further violence and protect public property.

He also extended his condolences to the families of those killed in the violence, confirming the deaths of five members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and injuries to several others.
