Sharia Law Debate Rekindled as Sheikh Gumi Responds to Reported U.S. Pressure

A prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has publicly defended the continued application of Sharia law in parts of Nigeria, describing it as a matter of religious freedom reserved exclusively for Muslims.

In a series of posts on his verified social media accounts, the Kaduna-based cleric reacted to reports carried by Naija News that some members of the United States Congress had urged Donald Trump to press for the abolition of Sharia and blasphemy laws in Nigeria.

Gumi argued that Muslims have the right to be governed by their religious injunctions without external interference, framing Sharia law as comparable to what he described as protections for Christian interests within U.S. governance and foreign policy. According to him, Sharia remains the prerogative of Muslims and should not be subjected to international pressure.

“Shariah Law is the Muslims’ prerogative just as the US found it only necessary to protect the Christians,” the cleric wrote.

His comments emerge amid renewed international attention on religious legal systems operating in Nigeria, particularly in several northern states where Sharia law functions alongside the country’s conventional legal framework. Under Nigeria’s constitutional structure, Sharia courts primarily handle matters of personal status, family law, and civil issues involving Muslim adherents, operating parallel to secular courts.

In further remarks, Gumi alleged that Muslims in Nigeria have been victims of what he termed “occult terror” introduced by unnamed forces. He did not provide specific evidence or identify the actors involved, leaving the claim unelaborated.

“At the same time, Muslims are more victims of this occult terror imported into the country by hidden forces they very well know,” he stated.

The cleric also questioned what he described as inconsistencies in global attitudes toward religion and governance, suggesting that religious influence in state affairs is selectively criticized depending on faith and geography.

“It’s ok for US evangelical Christians administration for Israel to live by biblical stories yet Haram for Muslims to live by the Quranic injunctions,” he wrote.

As of the time of reporting, there has been no independent confirmation of a formal request by U.S. lawmakers or direct engagement with Nigerian authorities on abolishing Sharia law. Neither U.S. officials nor the Nigerian federal government have issued an official response to the claims referenced by Gumi.

The debate underscores long-standing sensitivities around religion, law, and sovereignty in Nigeria’s plural society, where constitutional guarantees of religious freedom coexist with complex legal and political realities
