Wike: It’s Either You’re In Opposition Or You’re Working For Govt In Power; You Can’t Be Both—Dickson

Senator Seriake Dickson, the former Governor of Bayelsa State and founder of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for a definitive end to political ambiguity within Nigeria’s opposition.

In a pointed interview on AIT on Monday, March 30, 2026, Dickson addressed the growing trend of politicians attempting to occupy two worlds at once specifically referencing the unique position of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who serves in an APC cabinet while maintaining influence within the PDP.

Dickson argued that a healthy democratic system relies on a clear distinction between the ruling party and the opposition.

He suggested that when the lines become blurred, democratic institutions are weakened, and the public is left without a clear alternative in policy debates.

The former governor explained that his own decision to distance himself from certain political circles was driven by a refusal to participate in what he described as a dual-loyalty tendency.

“So, the moment I saw that tendency was gaining ground, it was time for me to leave,” Dickson stated. “Because, for me, it’s either you are in opposition or you are working for the government in power, and that is legitimate. But you see, you can’t be both. You must be this or that.”

According to Dickson, the working for the government route is a valid and honorable choice, but it must come with the appropriate political branding.

He emphasized that consistency in affiliation is not just about party loyalty, but about providing structure and direction for the nation.
