The only primary school serving Araran in Ofonbongha/Yala ward of Obubra Local Government Area is on the verge of collapse, sparking alarm among local residents who say urgent government intervention is needed to avert a looming disaster.

The Community Primary School, Araran, once a beacon of learning in the area, is now a shadow of itself.

The classrooms are layered in dust, the roof is riddled with holes, and the entire structure is dangerously deteriorated.

Parents, teachers, and community leaders are raising their voices, calling on the Cross River State Government and the senator representing Cross River Central to act swiftly.

“The school is not just an eyesore—it’s a serious health hazard,” said a concerned resident.

“Our children struggle to breathe in those dusty classrooms, and the leaking roof puts them at constant risk, especially during the rainy season.”

Medical experts warn that long-term exposure to dusty environments can lead to or worsen respiratory illnesses such as asthma and bronchitis, conditions that are especially dangerous for young children.

Community members say the situation is affecting the children’s ability to learn and thrive, and they fear it could lead to greater harm if left unaddressed.

Education advocates and local stakeholders insist that immediate steps be taken—either through a comprehensive renovation or a total rebuild of the school.

“No child should be forced to learn in unsafe and unhealthy conditions,” a local teacher said. “Education is a right, not a privilege.

‘These children deserve a safe, supportive environment where they can grow and succeed.”

The community is unified in its call for urgent government action before the structure fails completely.

As the only educational facility in the area, the school remains a critical pillar of hope and opportunity for the children of Araran.

Decrying the state of the school, MonITNG, a civic tech organisation, which visited the school lamented, “The current state of the school is not just an eyesore, it’s a serious health risk. Dust-filled classrooms make it hard for children to breathe and focus.

“Constant exposure to dust can cause or worsen respiratory illnesses like asthma and bronchitis. These are children who deserve better.”

The organisation added, “We join the community in calling on the relevant authorities to take swift action.

“The school needs urgent renovation or a complete rebuild. No child should be forced to learn in such unsafe and unhealthy conditions.

“Education is a right, not a privilege, and these children deserve a safe place to learn and grow.”
