Human rights lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has called for a thorough investigation into the killing of Michael Kenechukwu Ekemezie, a 39-year-old Nigerian man who died after a violent encounter with Swiss police in Lausanne, Switzerland.

A viral video shows Ekemezie pinned to the ground, crying out in pain and shouting, “You’re hurting me”.

Ekemezie’s death bears similarities to the infamous murder of George Floyd in the United States, with Ejiofor noting that both incidents involve brutal force by law enforcement officers.

The footage shows Ekemezie handcuffed and pinned face-down, with visible distress, yet no attempt was made to help him.

Ejiofor, also counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has submitted a petition to the Swiss Embassy in Nigeria, demanding the immediate and transparent investigation.

“The Swiss authorities should initiate an independent and thorough investigation into Ekemezie’s death. All officers involved should be identified, arrested, and prosecuted for their roles in the killing.”

He also sought ompensation for the family: the Swiss Government should provide full compensation to Ekemezie’s family for their emotional and psychological trauma. Repatriation of remains: Assistance should be rendered for the dignified repatriation of Ekemezie’s remains to Nigeria.

“We call on the Government of Switzerland to rise to its international obligations and ensure justice is done; the Nigerian government to assertively demand answers and justice for its citizens; international human rights organisations, civil society groups, and media platforms to speak out and shine a light on this gross injustice,” Ejiofor stated.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with Nigerians and Africans residing in Switzerland protesting to demand accountability and transparency.

Ejiofor emphasised the need for fairness and accountability in the investigation, stating, “Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done.”
