A civil society organisation, MonITNG, has expressed concerns over the imminent collapse of NKST Secondary School in Mgor, Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, calling on Governor Hyacinth Alia to take immediate action.

The organisation described the school as being on the brink of collapse, with structures riddled with cracks, a deteriorating roof, and debris scattered across the compound.

What was once a centre of learning has now become a hazardous environment for students.

In a statement issued on Saturday, MonITNG expressed deep concern that children are still expected to attend classes in such life-threatening conditions.

They noted that the building is no longer safe, yet education continues within its walls.

However, despite repeated appeals from the community — including letters, media engagements, and town hall meetings involving parents, teachers, and traditional leaders — MonITNG said the government has failed to respond.

The school continues to decay while children risk their lives just to receive an education, the group said, urging not only the governor but also the National Assembly member representing Katsina-Ala to take immediate action.

According to MonITNG, funding for educational infrastructure has already been allocated, leaving political will as the only missing ingredient to address the crisis.

The organisation explained that the children deserve safe and decent classrooms — not buildings that could collapse at any moment.

The statement read, “The only secondary school in Mgor, Katsina-Ala LGA of Benue State, NKST Secondary School, is on the brink of collapse. The building is riddled with massive cracks, the roof is falling apart, and debris litters the compound. What used to be a learning centre has now become a death trap. Children are expected to study here every day.

“Despite repeated pleas from the local community, the government has failed to take action. Parents, teachers and traditional leaders have written letters, granted interviews, and even held community meetings to raise awareness. Yet, the school continues to decay while the children risk their lives just to receive an education.

“This neglect is hard to justify when you look at the state’s education budgets. In 2020, Benue State allocated ₦19.7bn to education. This rose to ₦20.8bn in 2021, ₦24.5bn in 2022, and ₦42.5bn in 2023. In 2024, the figure was ₦33.85bn, and for 2025, education got ₦82.52bn, which is 15% of the ₦550.1bn total budget. With these figures, how can a school like NKST still be in ruins?”

According to the statement, “We are calling on Governor @HyacinthAlia and the National Assembly member representing Katsina-Ala to urgently intervene. The funds have been allocated; what’s left is the political will to act. Our children deserve to learn in safe, decent classrooms, not in buildings that could collapse any day. The longer the delay, the greater the risk.

“This is a direct appeal to every concerned Nigerian: share this, speak out, and demand accountability. Our children in Mgor deserve the same quality of education,” MonITNG
