Reactions Trail What Peter Obi Said After He Heard That NAF Airstrike Have Claimed Innocent lives

Reactions have continued to trail comments made by Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate, following reports of a Nigerian Air Force airstrike that allegedly claimed the lives of innocent civilians.

In a statement shared on his official X account, Obi said he had read reports of the accidental airstrike at Jilli Market, located along the Borno–Yobe border, which reportedly led to multiple civilian deaths.

He expressed deep sorrow over the incident, extending condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the governments and people of the affected states. He prayed for the repose of the deceased and comfort for those grieving the loss of their loved ones.

Obi noted that he had deliberately avoided making premature conclusions, emphasizing that critical details surrounding the incident, including what exactly transpired and the confirmed number of casualties remain unclear.

However, he observed that such tragic occurrences are often linked to a mix of operational difficulties, coordination gaps, and limitations in military equipment, including ageing platforms.

He pointed out that Nigeria has witnessed similar incidents in the past, stressing the urgent need for investment in modern fighter jets, upgrades to existing platforms, and continuous training and retraining of military personnel.

Despite the tragedy, Obi urged Nigerians to remain supportive of the armed forces, acknowledging the risks security personnel face daily in protecting the nation. At the same time, he insisted that they must be adequately equipped and properly supported to prevent avoidable incidents.

He concluded by calling on Bola Ahmed Tinubu to rise to the challenge of addressing Nigeria’s security situation through decisive leadership, improved coordination, and sustained investment in modern defence capabilities
