Should the Supreme Court give a contrary decision, we are law-abiding citizens, we will abide by the law- Ogene

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declared that it will comply fully with any judgment delivered by the Supreme Court regarding the ongoing legal battle over the party’s leadership structure, even if the ruling does not favour the faction aligned with Senator David Mark.

This position was made known by the leader of the ADC caucus in the House of Representatives, Honourable Victor Ogene, during a recent interview on Arise News. He emphasized that members of the party remain committed to the rule of law and will not act outside the boundaries of Nigeria’s constitutional and judicial framework, regardless of the outcome of the case.

Ogene stressed that the ADC, as a political institution operating within a democratic system, recognizes the Supreme Court as the highest and final authority in the country’s judicial hierarchy. According to him, whatever decision emerges from the apex court will be binding on all members of the party.

He further stated that, “Should the Supreme Court give a contrary decision, we are law-abiding citizens, we will abide by the law,” reinforcing the party’s stated commitment to legal processes over internal political disagreements.

Despite this assurance of compliance, Ogene expressed optimism that the Supreme Court would take into account the wider political and democratic consequences of its ruling. He suggested that the judgment is expected to reflect sensitivity to the current realities facing opposition parties in Nigeria.

According to him, a decision that tilts in favour of the opposing faction could potentially deepen internal tensions within the ADC and contribute to further instability in the already delicate opposition landscape, especially as political activities gradually build toward the 2027 general elections.

The leadership crisis within the ADC has continued to generate legal and political debate, with different factions laying claim to the control of the party structure. The matter has now escalated to the Supreme Court, making its eventual ruling highly significant for the future direction of the party.

Observers note that the outcome of the case could have far-reaching implications not only for the ADC but also for broader opposition politics in Nigeria. A final verdict from the Supreme Court is expected to bring clarity to the dispute, although political analysts say it may also reshape alliances and strategies ahead of future elections.
