5 Senior Nigerian Military Officers Killed by Boko Haram in 2026

Boko Haram has dealt another blow to Nigeria’s military by killing five senior officers in a series of attacks across Borno State.

These attacks highlight the ongoing security challenges faced by the Nigerian Armed Forces in the northeastern region, where Boko Haram has continued to target military personnel.

On April 15, 2026, the Nigerian Army confirmed the death of a senior military officer from the Munguno camp in Borno State. The officer, whose name has not been revealed, was killed when his vehicle hit an improvised explosive device (IED) during a Boko Haram attack.

The officer was on the ground assessing the situation with his troops when the explosion occurred. Along with the officer, six other soldiers also lost their lives in the attack. This loss marked another tragic incident in the ongoing battle against Boko Haram.

  1. Benisheikh Attack: Brigadier General Oseni Braimah (April 9, 2026)
Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, a senior officer in the Nigerian Army, was killed during a Boko Haram attack on the 29 Task Force Brigade in Benisheikh, Borno State, on April 9, 2026. Despite a strong response from Nigerian soldiers, General Braimah lost his life in the assault.

The soldiers’ professionalism and superior firepower repelled the attack, but they were unable to save their commander. President Bola Tinubu later expressed condolences to the families of General Braimah and the other fallen soldiers.

  1. Damasak Attack: Senior Officer Killed (January 2026)
In January 2026, Iswap insurgents attacked the Damasak military base in Mobbar Local Government Area, Borno State. During the attack, a senior officer, who was leading a foot patrol with about 30 soldiers, was killed by explosives planted by the militants.
