Gumi Curses Abductors of UNIJOS Graduate;Ex-
Islamic cleric Ahmad Gumi has condemned the abduction of a graduate of University of Jos, invoking curses on those responsible and describing Nigeria’s worsening kidnapping crisis as a failure of leadership and strategy. His reaction followed a viral video showing the victim, John Arum, in captivity with abductors demanding a ₦30 million ransom, sparking public outrage and concern over rising insecurity.
Gumi criticised the reliance on military force alone, arguing that it has failed to curb insecurity and should be complemented with dialogue, mediation, and non-kinetic approaches. He also warned against slow government response, saying it has emboldened criminal networks, while urging practical solutions over emotional reactions. Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigerian Students issued a 48-hour ultimatum to authorities to secure the victim’s release, threatening nationwide protests if no action is taken.
